Story Setting
Though the exact time period of the story is unclear, references to trains suggest it could take place in the 18th century or later. The story follows a young boy named Ichi, who was abandoned at the age of six. In his desperation, he contemplates suicide but is forced to defend himself when a wolf attacks. After killing the wolf, Ichi discovers his strong will to survive.
In this world, witches use a living form of magic called “majiks,” which have their own wills and can only be wielded by females. To use majik, a witch must first fulfill the magic’s wish. These powerful, dangerous forces can take on any shape, making them unpredictable and terrifying.
The plot takes a dramatic turn when Ichi stumbles upon a witch being attacked by the king of magic, “King Uroro.” In a desperate move, Ichi stabs the king, and against all odds, the majik merges with him. This is a rare and extraordinary event, as men have only a 0.001 percent chance of acquiring magic. With King Uroro’s majik now inside him, Ichi’s life is changed forever.
Art Style and Design
The manga is beautifully illustrated, with detailed artwork that stands out in every panel. Unlike many weekly manga, where backgrounds are often left blank due to time constraints, Madan No Ichi boasts richly detailed scenes. The character designs, especially for the witches, are particularly captivating, and the shading and background art are reminiscent of the stunning visuals in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End.
Fantasy Manga Trend
With the rise in popularity of fantasy series like Frieren and Dungeon Meshi, there’s growing interest in witch and magic-centered stories. Madan No Ichi is set to be a major player in this emerging trend, offering readers a fresh take on the genre with its unique power system, breathtaking art, and a compelling narrative.
This new manga, with its strong writing and stunning illustrations, has the potential to attract a broad audience of fantasy fans and solidify its place in the genre. Keep an eye on Madan No Ichi as it promises to be one of the standout fantasy epics in the coming years.
